Switching from OnSong to SongSheet Pro

SongSheet Pro is a native iPad and iPhone app that does most of what OnSong does, plus a few things of its own. This guide shows what’s the same, what’s different, and how to move your library across.

Ready to try it? Download SongSheet Pro free and follow the walkthrough below. Importing won’t change anything in OnSong, so there’s no risk in trying!

Stuck? Send us a sample file and we’ll help.

Should I switch?

What SongSheet Pro users love:

  • A developer who listens
  • Its ease of use
  • How rock-solid it is on stage
  • The free trial & lifetime purchase, with every future feature included

SongSheet Pro excels at:

You’ll find familiar OnSong features such as:

Plus a few SongSheet Pro extras:

Not supported yet:

  • Cloud sync (in active development)
  • Editing on a computer (a native Mac app is in development)
  • Projecting to band members’ devices
  • Integrations (DMX stage lighting, MIDI CC, Planning Center, MultiTracks)

Unlike OnSong, which is now subscription-only, a one-time purchase includes every future feature at no extra cost.

Until cloud sync arrives, you can put your library on a second iPad or iPhone by importing the same OnSong backup there, or by restoring a SongSheet Pro backup (restoring replaces that device’s library).

What transfers from OnSong

SongSheet Pro imports OnSong songs, archives, and full backups, plus PDF, plain text, Word, RTF, images, and scans.

What comes across:

  • Chord charts (ChordPro and OnSong) — lyrics, chords, section labels, and comments
  • Song details — title, artist, key, capo, tempo, time signature, duration, copyright, CCLI number, composer, and lyricist
  • Setlists — from an OnSong archive or a full backup
  • PDFs, scans, and other documents — performed as-is, or converted into editable songs later
  • Keywords and topics — as SongSheet Pro tags

What you’ll set up again:

  • Folders and books — use tags to reorganize songs as you review them
  • Transposition, arrangements, backing tracks, and annotations — songs import at their written key
  • Themes, pedal mappings, and external displays — OnSong’s settings can’t be imported

For a complete list of what can and can’t be imported from OnSong files, see OnSong support in the user manual.

Migrate your library: a walkthrough

Importing doesn’t change anything in OnSong. Keep OnSong installed and keep your exported files until you’ve rehearsed with your new setup. If you later remove OnSong from your device, keep a backup first.

1. Test the waters: try a few songs

Before you move your whole library, try a few representative songs or a recent setlist: for example, a simple chart, a PDF or scan, and a song with its key, tempo, and CCLI number filled in.

  1. Export from OnSong. Choose the ChordPro format for song charts, since both apps understand it well (OnSong-format files work too), and export PDF-based songs as their original PDFs. To test a setlist, export it as an OnSong archive.
  2. Move the files to your device. Save them anywhere the Files app can reach, such as iCloud Drive or Dropbox, or AirDrop or email them to the device.
  3. Import them into SongSheet Pro. Download SongSheet Pro and start the free trial, then tap Add Songs, choose Browse, and select the files. You can also open OnSong files straight from the Files app, Mail, or the Share sheet. When you import a setlist archive, you can choose whether to recreate the setlist, or just import its songs into your library. If a song is already in your library, SongSheet Pro asks what to do with it.
  4. Check the results. Open a few songs to see how SongSheet Pro presents them and confirm the details came across. For PDFs and other documents, decide whether to perform from the original file or convert it into an editable song.

2. Dive in: import everything

If you’re happy with the test import, bring the rest of your library across. The easiest way is to use an OnSong backup, which includes your setlists: in OnSong, back up your entire library, then in SongSheet Pro tap Add Songs, choose Browse, and select the backup file.

Because you’ve already imported some test songs, SongSheet Pro will ask what to do with songs and setlists it already has. Choose Keep to leave them as they are, or Update to replace them with the backup’s versions. See import choices.

3. Start swimming: set up your performance tools

Before your first gig or service, set up the features you use:

During a performance you can also transpose or change capo on the fly, pinch to resize text, and preview what your external display is showing.

Test everything at a rehearsal before you rely on it live. That’s the best way to find small differences while there’s still time to fix them.

Frequently asked questions

Is SongSheet Pro a complete OnSong replacement?

For many musicians, yes. For production-heavy worship or stage workflows, maybe not yet. SongSheet Pro covers the core song library, chord chart, setlist, transpose, auto-scroll, backing track, foot pedal, sharing, and projection workflow. Cloud sync and a Mac app are in active development, and MIDI is planned, but you should choose based on what SongSheet Pro does today.

Can SongSheet Pro import OnSong files?

Yes. SongSheet Pro imports individual OnSong files, OnSong archives, and full OnSong backups, as well as ChordPro, plain text, PDF, Microsoft Word, RTF, images, and other formats. For moving a whole library, an OnSong backup is the easiest option because it brings your setlists too. ChordPro remains a good choice for individual editable charts.

Will my setlists transfer automatically?

Yes. Import an OnSong archive or a full OnSong backup and SongSheet Pro offers to recreate your OnSong setlists. If you migrate songs as individual files instead, plan to rebuild your setlists after importing. Either way, reviewing one setlist you perform often is a useful checkpoint: you can verify the songs you actually perform, clean up duplicates, and set up tags and favorites at the same time.

Can I bring across my PDFs and scanned charts?

Yes. SongSheet Pro can import PDFs and images directly, and scan paper charts with your device’s camera. Page-based documents can be used as-is for performance, and many can be converted into editable songs using text extraction or OCR.

What happens after the free trial?

You can subscribe monthly or annually, buy lifetime access, or keep the app installed without an active purchase. Without an active subscription or lifetime unlock, you can still view, print, and export your existing content, but creating and editing content requires active access.

Is there an Android, Windows, or web version?

No. SongSheet Pro is an iPad and iPhone app. If you need Android, Windows, or browser access as a core requirement, you should include cross-platform apps in your search.

Does SongSheet Pro work with Bluetooth pedals?

Yes. You can use Bluetooth foot pedals for hands-free control. You can also pair a pedal with SongSheet Remote on iPhone if you prefer to leave the iPad’s software keyboard behavior alone.

Is SongSheet Pro affiliated with OnSong?

No. SongSheet Pro is developed independently by Ghostdust Pty Ltd and is not affiliated with OnSong LLC. OnSong is a trademark of OnSong LLC.

Try it with your own songs

The best test is a real one: export five songs from OnSong, import them into SongSheet Pro, build a short setlist, and take it to rehearsal.

Download SongSheet Pro, try it free, and decide after you have seen your own charts in the app. If you hit an import problem, send a support request with a sample file.
